ALBG Spring 2010 Seminar:
"Draw Sabres! Charge!!" Selected Cavalry Actions in the Gettysburg
Campaign
Saturday, June 5, 2010
The Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides, Inc. proudly announces
the resumption of its spring seminar series. The one-day 2010
program highlights key cavalry actions
that have rarely received the attention they deserve, giving
participants the chance to follow in the footsteps of Custer,
Kilpatrick and J.E.B. Stuart, and others.
Tours:
“A Strong & Sudden
Onslaught”: The Battle of Hanover
- With
John Krepps, LBG
On June 30, 1863, Confederate and Union cavalry forces
unexpectedly collided at Hanover, a dozen miles east of Gettysburg. The
engagement that followed was a confused and vicious melee that swirled
through the streets and alleys of the town and spilled over into the
surrounding countryside. The result was a tactical draw, but the battle
had crucial consequences for the Confederate army when the fighting
began at Gettysburg the following day. John Krepps has been a resident
of the Hanover area all his life and is the author of A Strong &
Sudden Onslaught, the most comprehensive work on the battle to
date.
John brings his unique local expertise to telling the story of this
important engagement.
Clash of Sabers: East
Cavalry Field at Gettysburg
-
With Dave Hamacher, LBG
The role of the Union cavalry in the Civil War took a dramatic turn
during the Gettysburg Campaign. The fighting on July 3 east of
Gettysburg played an important part in this process and involved some
of the most famous and colorful personalities of the war. This tour
will cover the reasons why the two sides met on those quiet fields as
well as all aspects of the fighting, both mounted and dismounted. We
will also experience a battlefield that is very much like it was in
1863, including one of the original farms where some of the most
intense fighting occurred. Join Dave Hamacher for a comprehensive look
at this seldom-visited part of the Gettysburg battlefield, where J.E.B.
Stuart and David Gregg clashed, and where 23-year-old George Custer
began his rise to fame.
“Into the Mouth of
Hell”: Farnsworth’s Charge
-With
Andie Custer, LBG
The attack by Brig. Gen. Elon Farnsworth’s brigade on the late
afternoon of July 3 remains one of the most controversial and
misunderstood cavalry operations of the Civil War. It caused the death
of the promising young Farnsworth and resulted in heavy losses for some
of the Union regiments involved. For decades, the charge has been used
as an example of futility and military incompetence. But was it? What
did the attack actually accomplish? And where did it really take place?
Andie Custer has devoted years to the subject and knows this corner of
the Gettysburg battlefield better than anyone. She will lead this
in-depth walking tour of the real
Farnsworth battlefield, introducing
some of the heroes of the fighting and exploding long-held myths.
