July 8, 2014: Ward's Brigade & Defense of Houcks Ridge


Brigadier General John Henry Hobart Ward's brigade was the largest Union brigade at Gettysburg containing 8 regiments and almost 2200 men. It consisted of the1st & 2nd USSS, 3rd & 4th Maine, 86th & 124th New York, 99th Pennsylvania, and the 20th Indiana.   John's program will cover the Union defense of Houck's Ridge on the afternoon of July 2, 1863. It will give the history and background of each of Ward's regiments, their commanders, and the units sent to assist them. It will then follow the action of each regiment as they fought off repeated Confederate attacks that afternoon. The program will last approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours and will be over rough terrain, up and down Houck's Ridge. Meet at the Devil's Den parking area.
