“‘I get no respect’: Union Sixth Corps at Gettysburg” LBG Joe Mieczkowski

The claim that the Union Sixth Corps “did nothing”; at Gettysburg is largely a myth stemming from their late arrival after a grueling 35-mile march, but they were crucial by arriving on July 2nd and July 3rd, providing essential fresh troops, plugging gaps, and serving as a vital strategic reserve. Several individual brigades were in the thickest fighting, making their presence vital for Union morale and overall strength. We will examine the role and actions of General John Sedgwick and his subordinate commanders, who joked about having nothing to do after arriving.
